Modeling Wind Instrument Sound Radiation Using Digital Waveguides

چکیده

This paper develops the theory and digital waveguide implementation for modeling threedimensional (3D) sound emission from wind instrument air columns. It is shown that the current acoustic theory regarding sound radiation from ducts and holes can be implemented in the digital waveguide context using properly designed digital filters. Each radiating sound source or hole requires a firstor second-order digital filter to account for angularand frequency-dependent pressure distribution characteristics. Sound propagation delay from the source to the pickup is modeled with a delay line and possibly a fractional-delay interpolation filter. An additional digital filter to model attenuation in free space can also be used. The results of this model compare well with frequency-domain polar radiation calculations. A simplified system appropriate for real-time synthesis is developed that allows continuous pickup movement within an anechoic 3D space.

Direct Simulation for Wind Instrument Synthesis

There are now a number of methods available for generating synthetic sound based on physical models of wind instruments, including digital waveguides, wave digital filters, impedance-based methods and those involving impulse responses. Normally such methods are used to simulate the behaviour of the resonator, and the coupling to the excitation mechanism is carried out by making use of simple lu...

Coupling LBM and Digital Waveguides COUPLING LATTICE BOLTZMANN MODELS TO DIGITAL WAVEGUIDES FOR WIND INSTRUMENT SIMULATIONS

The lattice Boltzmann method (LBM) is a valuable numerical tool in musical acoustics, particularly when modeling wind instruments for which the interaction between the flow and the acoustic field is important. This paper describes an approach for addressing two limitations of LBM, namely computational cost and the inability to directly impose acoustical boundary conditions at open boundaries. T...

Estimating Waveguide Model Elements from Acoustic Tube Measurements

One-dimensional digital waveguides are widely used to model traveling pressure waves along wind instrument bores comprised of concatenated cylindrical or conical sections. Waveguide filter elements model frequencydependent losses and delay (dispersion) occurring during propagation and at any boundary or discontinuity producing reflected and transmitted waves. In this work, a technique is descri...

Weighted Least-Squares design techniques are applied to model the re ectance of a Bessel ho...

Modeling and Measurement of Wind Instrument Bores

ABSTRACT One dimensional digital waveguides are widely used to model travelling pressure waves along wind instrument bores. These models must also account for frequency-dependent losses occurring along the bore walls, and at boundaries. This is accomplished by incorporating waveguide filter elements, which are based on the widely accepted theory describing these losses. A measurement technique ...
